Contemporary society is constantly facing ecological and energy saving problems. Firstly, every year the cost of resources used for electricity production rises, which has a bad influence on a family’s budget and the government’s as well. Secondly, a growing number of different electrical appliances and gadgets, general computerisation have raised the level of energy consumption. Thirdly, power stations affect ecology badly. So, the more electricity consumption, the more our ecosystem suffers.
After studying some researches, we found out that there were a number of ways which could help to reduce electricity consumption. For example, using energy saving bulbs, A-class electricity consumption appliances, white / light pattern decoration, gas cookers and the like. Of course, it does good if you are at the beginning of deciding what to choose and where to live.
But what can a usual citizen in his already existing home do to save electricity? That’s what we did to answer this question.
1. We visited the local power station where we learned that the problem of electricity consumption was very actual as our city was facing a constant increase in energy consumption.
2. Each of us got a task to study the way we use electrical appliances in our homes. We analised the results and made a list of things everyone could do to lower electricity consumption. We suggested the following.
A. Unplug electrical appliances and chargers when not using them.
B. Use appliances economically.
· Choose one programme so that the whole family could watch (one television at a time).
· Use natural hair drying.
· Wash the dishes yourself.
· Warm food in microwave ovens instead of electric cookers.
· Wash small articles of clothes yourself and use a washing machine for large amounts of clothes.
C. Prefer damp sweeping to vacuum cleaning.
D. Don’t open the fridge door without necessity, don’t keep hot dishes in the fridge.
E. Recycle batteries (in this case no electricity will be used to produce them).
F. Recycle aluminum cans (production of one recycled can lets TV work for 3 hours).
3. We also asked the teachers and the pupils of the primary school to take part in our survey in order to see if our respondents were aware of the problem. The survey showed that our younger generation didn’t know the simplest rules of energy saving and that many adults preferred not to save if it caused inconvenience.
4. We made an experiment and found out that our recommendations were reasonable.
5. We made a report in the primary school and explained the pupils the importance of saving electricity at home as well as in the school and the simplicity of doing it.
Our research showed that every person was able to do his/her own bit to gain the common goal.
